It is also important that students understand how many and which questions to do. Unfortunately, some do not realise that they need to find ‘their’ different cultures text, or that they must choose between the two essay questions, which naturally reduces their opportunities for marks. A good solution which is also easily overlooked is to make sure students work from at least one full exam booklet leading up to the exam. This ensures they know the overall format and aren’t surprised to find different texts on the paper. It is worth pointing these common errors out to students, as a few seem to think that answering more questions hedges their bets when of course it only reduces the time spent per question to an impossibly low level that practically guarantees failure.
