Symbolically, our winning essay was written by a student from the United States and one from China, and it identified cybersecurity as the biggest ethical challenge in U.S.-Asia relations. The authors, Robert D. O'Brien and Shiran Shen, will be invited to join Carnegie Council's annual Global Ethics Fellows meeting in New York City. These annual meetings aim to advance ethical dialogue between cultures, and perhaps can play a role in finding peaceful solutions to international disputes.

Our Founding Fathers, in their dedication to liberty, promoted the freedom of all Americans to practice religious beliefs, or not, as they choose. Although the freedom not to practice Religion is intrinsic to religious freedom, that protection does not mean that this non-practice of Religion is equally beneficial to society. Social science data reinforce George Washington's declaration in his farewell address: "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports."

Religion and Sexual Behavior. Although frequent religious attendance is highly correlated with less sexual activity among those who are not married, some religiously observant individuals do become sexually active. These individuals tend to use contraception less and thus do not have the protection of abstinence or barriers to prevent pregnancy or infection. Among adolescent males from divorced families, there are indications of a positive correlation between frequent church attendance and an increased number of sexual partners. This relationship, however, does not appear among female adolescents from divorced families. Motivation for Religious Practice. Researchers cite two types of motivation for religious practice: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for religious practice seem to result in two very different types of outcomes.

The graduation reception also gave the School an opportunity to announce the special achivements of particular students within the School. Professor Richard Whitman was delighted to present the selected students with a certificate and prize. Thomas Watts who studied on the MA in International Relations won the John Burton Prize for best overall performance and The ‘Global Society’ Journal Prize for the beest MA dissertation. Two of our International Conflict Analysis Students Anja Teichert and Markus Breitweg both were awarded a special commendation certificate from the School for an outstanding MA dissertation. Finally, Victor Poirer was awarded the Best overall performance in the BA in Politics and International Relations (Bidiplome).
